CENTRAL COACHES CHAIR FEBRUARY 2018 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER
ATTENTION CENTRAL DIVISION RACERS & COACHES

The Central FIS athletes just completed the U19 National Slalom Qualifiers at Lutsen Mountain. It was “brutally” cold but the races still were held and it gave us a measuring stick to see what we need to do as a Division to become better. As we begin to develop a plan on how to make Central Strong it is important also to evaluate our Central Division to understand where we need to make changes on how we must do things going forward. I plan on beginning with some small “discussion” groups this spring to assess our areas of strength and our areas that are deficient.

Each Club (team) within the Central Division is preparing their athletes for the upcoming U14/U16 Qualifiers for the Rocky/Central Junior Championships held throughout the month of March in Colorado. As we prepare our athletes, I have put together an opportunity for athletes in the Central Division to come and train Slalom & Giant Slalom at Granite Peak Ski Area from February 12th thru February 16th. I am calling it the NORTH DAKOTA SHOOTOUT. The Bottineau (ND) Winter Park athletes will be in Granite Peak (Wausau, WI) that week training and we are inviting all the teams and athletes in for the Central Division to come together and train together each day. Teams are welcome to come for one day and/or as many days that they would like too. Individual athletes are welcome to attend also and the cost for all teams/athletes is the price of a lift ticket. The Granite Peak Ski Team will provide all gates (SL & GS), along with drills, radios, etc. for teams. The training venue at Granite Peak is B-netted from top to bottom for our athletes’ safety. The local Quality Inn of Wausau is sponsoring this event with discounted rooms for individuals and teams (just mention Granite Peak Ski Team). Training will begin each day for that week at 10AM – 4PM. Evening sessions are also available. Please contact me at 906-282-1902 with any questions.

Our FIS athletes will get another opportunity to race on February 24th & 25th at Mt. La Crosse. This will be two (2) FIS Slalom events that are not part of the Mid-America Series, but additional opportunities for our Central athletes to compete on a great hill, with expected great athletes in attendance. The goal is
to give our FIS athletes an opportunity to compete at a FIS race that is in our Central Division without having to travel outside our Division.

Eric Cates (US Ski & Snowboard Central Division Manager) & I have been working with Alpine Ontario regarding the U14 Provincial Games (held in mid-March) at Searchmont Mt. in Canada. More news on this event for our U14 Development will be coming out in soon. Eric will be getting this information out to Coaches as soon as the details are finalized.

Finally, the Central Division will be holding a Coaches Level 200 event at Granite Peak Ski Area (Wausau, WI) beginning on Friday, April 6th through Sunday, April 8th. I have been told that a course setting class will be held as part of this training. To register go to: http://ussa.3dcartstores.com/Level-200-Alpine-Clinic--Granite-Peak-WI--April-6-8-2018_p_1057.html. Questions regarding this event should be addressed to Anna Hosmer: anna.hosmer@usskiandsnowboard.org

This Coaches Level 200 Course will be held in conjunction with the Central Division April Skills & Thrills Camp held at Granite Peak (Wausau, WI) on Saturday, April 7th & Sunday, April 8th. Our goal is to give our athletes throughout the Central Division late season opportunities to come together as ONE and train, develop new friendships and provide the best possible learning opportunities for all our Central athletes and coaches.

I hope to see all of the athletes, parents, and coaches in the Central Division come together and support working together to make the

Central Division STRONG!
