CENTRAL COACHES CHAIR APRIL/MAY 2018 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

ATTENTION CENTRAL DIVISION RACERS & COACHES

Welcome to WINTER! What a great way to close out our 2017-2018 Season. As all you know you certainly could find snow to ski on in April. As I write your monthly Central Coaches newsletter, I am sitting in Chicago at our Central Alpine Sport Committee (CASC) meetings, wishing I was out skiing at my home hill.

As coaches we had an opportunity in April to increase our education with US Ski & Snowboard bringing a Level 200 and Course Setting Class to the Central Division at Granite Peak Ski Area. We had 10 Central Coaches attend the Course Setting Clinic. The Central Division had 14 coaches complete the on hill portion for the Level 200 the first full weekend in April. A big THANK YOU goes out to Brewster McVicker and Caryn Jones for their leadership and instruction of our Central Coaches. That same weekend in April 7th & 8th the U.S. Ski Central Division Skills & Thrills project had 62 athletes attend with U19 to U8 ages working together. Everyone who attended, especially the older athletes commented to the coaches, “…what a great time. It is awesome to ski with other older athletes on various terrain which forced us to get better.”

There is a great opportunity for our Central athletes who qualified U14/U16 Junior Championships to attend the Rocky/Central Skills Camp held May 24th – May 28th at A-Basin, CO. This is an opportunity for our Central athletes to get exposed to GS skiing skills and terrain opportunities, along with skiing with U14/U16 Rocky athletes. I highly recommend this camp to your athletes that qualified. I have attached the FACT SHEET to this Monthly Central Coaches Newsletter for your convenience to get out to your athletes, (see attached).

Finally, I met with our Central Division Regional Chairs (CR1-Tony Olin, CR2-Sydney Koop, CR3/4-Dan Janowiak) on Friday night before our CASC meeting. I have asked each of the designated coaches chairs to reach out to their coaches and their Regional Leaders within their areas to set up meetings with them
before the Central Leadership Retreat in August to discuss areas that they feel will make Central Stronger. Two of the areas of focus would be; 1. How to work together between CR1, CR2, & CR3/4 through scheduling of events and projects and 2. How to come together as a Central Division for qualifying for Rocky/Central Junior Championships. This second item has been asked to make recommendations to Central Alpine Sport Committee by June 1, 2018.

I hope to see all of the athletes, parents, and coaches in the Central Division continue to come together and support working together to make the Central Division STRONG!
